On July 8, 2008 the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On ratifying Protocol on preventing and suppressing trafficking in persons, in particular, of women and children, and punishment for this, which supplements the United Nations Convention against transnational organized crime (New York, November 15, 2000)”.

The Law was adopted by the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan on June 23, 2008 and approved by the Senate of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan on June 27, 2008.

The Permanent representative of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the United Nations signed the Protocol in 2001. In accordance with final provisions, the Protocol takes effect following its ratification.

The document envisages implementation of a set of measures by a participating state on combating the trafficking in persons (preventing trafficking in persons, rendering help to its victims, criminal prosecution of human traffickers, cooperation with other participating states), as well as improvement of national mechanisms.

At the moment, the Protocol was ratified by 116 states.

On April 17, 2008 the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On countering trafficking in persons”, in which the norms of this international act are fully taken into account and implemented.
