A new look of an ancient land

Khorezm is one of the ancient regions of Uzbekistan.
The word “Khorezm” is originated from the combination of Persian words “khvar” – sun and “azm” – country, homeland and means “the land of the sun”. “Avesta”, the unique remembrance of our nation’s spirituality and the sacred book of Zoroastrians, was written in the Khorezm region and the word “Khorezm” could be found for the first time in this book. Today, one can see the statue of Avesta as well as the park garden named after this sacred book built in the city of Urganch as a sign of honor to the intelligence of our ancestors.
Khorezm is the cradle of great scientists who changed the world. There were many great scholars born in this land such as Muhammad ibn Muso al-Khorazmiy, the founder of algebra and inventor of the number “0”, Al-Biruni, father of geodesy and the founder of the Academy of Mamun, Mahmud Zamakhshariy, the inventor of the Arab language grammar, Najmuddin Kubra, founder of Kubrawiya, Ismail Jurjoniy, a great physician, Pahlavon Makhmoud, the legendary wrestler, Jaloliddin Manguberdi, a national hero of the Uzbek society.
The ancient monuments of Khorezm preserved until today are considered to be the pride of Uzbekistan. There are 256 cultural properties in the region, out of which 18 are archaeological, 134 are architectural and 66 are sculptural monuments as well as 32 are sacred places of pilgrimage and 6 are places of sightseeing.
The ancient inner-town of the city of Khiva is called “Itchan Kala”, which is known as «the museum under the sky» or «open-air museum» with a total area of 27 hectares, has more than hundred historical monuments listed in the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.
Khorezm is not only famous for its historical monuments, but it also draws world-wide attention to its specific geography and nature. It mesmerizes tourists with its deserts, dunes, at times tumultuously and occasionally quietly flowing Amudarya, various lakes and surrounding buildings, which are the products of human creativity, outspoken, kind, hardworking and entrepreneurial people and their specific habit of its kind, inimitable songs and dances, wedding ceremonies, cuisine, Hazorasp apples and Khivan pomegranates, Bogot grapes, Begovot melons, each of which gets undoubtedly engraved into visitors’ memory.
