Bolstering Interaction among Shanghai Coop. Org. Member Nations, Observer Countries to Combat International Terrorism, Extremism Discussed at a Conference in Tashkent

international_tourismA second conference on cooperation among Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) participating states and observer nations in combating international terrorism and extremism took place in the city of Tashkent on November 18, 2014, chaired by Zhang Xinfeng, Director of Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure. The forum was attended by officials of national special services of SCO member countries and observer states.

It was stated that the mounting activity of international terror organizations in various regions of the world has become a real factor in the threat to the stable situation in the sphere of fight against terrorism in the SCO area.

The meeting participants exchanged views on the outcomes of the implementation of agreements reached during the first conference. The parties agreed that noticeable achievements in cementing partnership relations have been made. To boost stability and security in the region, counter the terrorism, separatism and extremism, it is essential to bolster the interaction among the corresponding agencies of members and observers of the SCO.

The institution’s participating nations and observer countries confirmed their commitment to the consolidation of the central coordinating role of the United Nations in the arrangement of international counteraction of the terror threat.

The conference participants acknowledged that an effective instrument in addressing the new threats and challenges is the unification of joint actions, collection and exchange of data with regard to terrorist organizations.

The parties agreed to create working mechanisms in interaction between the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS) and competent authorities of the organization’s observer nations on the basis of draft protocols approved by the RATS Council to regulate counterterrorism interaction among them.

The conference participants expressed high appreciation of the level of its organization and conduct, extended their gratitude to the Executive Committee of the SCO RATS for the efforts in its preparation, for the created environment and conveniences conducive for its operation and for hospitality.
