An international symposium entitled “New Trends of Development Fundamental and Applied Physics: Problems, Achievements and Prospects” took place in Tashkent on 10-11 November. The symposium was held at the initiative of Uzbekistan’s First President Islam Karimov.
At the symposium, the most important issues of physics, astronomy, astrophysics, energy, scientific bases for increasing the efficiency of the use of renewable energy sources, the extraction of new materials from local raw resources and the development of modern nanophysics and nanotechnologies were discussed.
“The international symposium was held at a high level. This made it possible to discuss scientific issues, achievements and prospects in fundamental and applied physics and to study new trends of development,” says Professor Igor Bray, Curtin University (Australia).
In the years of independence, cooperation was initiated between German Research Centre for Geosciences and the Mirzo Ulighbek Astronomy Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. As a result, the Kitob, Tashkent and Maydanak international stations of the Global Positioning System (GPS) were established.
Professor Oleg Pchelyakov, deputy director of the Institute of Semiconductor Physics at the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has said that Uzbekistan has a favourable geographical location and climate as well as the necessary foundations for the development of solar energy. Uzbekistan has more than 320 sunny days a year on average, and therefore the country’s prospects for the generation of this type of renewable energy are very promising.
On the whole, this international symposium made it possible again to widely and internationally display successes achieved by the Uzbek school of physics in the years of independence. Such events play an important role in the development of not only science but also other spheres of society’s life.
