New stage in relations between Uzbekistan and the EU

On May 21, members of the delegation led by the head of the working group of the Council of the European Union for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Jutta Edthofer, met with the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan N.Ismoilov.

Representatives of 28 member states of the European Union arrived as part of the working group. They will study all aspects of the European Union’s bilateral and interregional relations with the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

At the meeting, they talked about large-scale reforms conducted in accordance with the Action Strategy on five priority areas of development of the Republic of Uzbekistan, an effective and unique system of dialogue with people.

Information was also provided on the structure of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, the friendship groups formed within the framework of cooperation with parliaments of foreign countries, the activities of the Institute of Problems of Legislation and Parliamentary Studies under the Oliy Majlis, the portal of public electronic appeals “Mening fikrim” (“My opinion”).

Within the framework of partnership and cooperation agreement between Uzbekistan and the European Union, a parliamentary cooperation committee and six partner organizations have been formed, including small committees. There are more than 1000 enterprises with investments from the member states of the European Union in Uzbekistan. With technical assistance of the Commission of the European Union, 35 projects are being implemented on development of business and tourism, transport logistics, border management, combating drug trafficking, security and other areas.

The meeting was held in an interesting and constructive manner. Members of the delegation got acquainted with activities of the lower house of parliament. An exchange of views took place on strengthening inter-parliamentary relations and conducting a regular dialogue with a view to creating a reliable basis for the development of bilateral cooperation.

On the same day, at the Development Strategy Center, members of the delegation held talks with the Ombudsman of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan U.Mukhammadiyev.

At the meeting, members of the delegation got acquainted with the program of events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the process of forming a national preventive mechanism on the basis of the Ombudsman institution, the Ombudsman for protecting the rights of needy strata of the population, cooperation with the United Nations Development Program, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, OSCE and other international structures.

The sides discussed issues of strengthening mutual cooperation, exchanging experience in protecting human rights and freedoms.
