“Uzbekistan is hoping to boost its tourism industry with a plan to ease visa conditions for visitors.

Starting on Saturday, the government of the central Asian country will simplify procedures for tourist visas for citizens of 39 countries. It says people from 7 countries – Israel, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Turkey – will be allowed to stay visa-free for up to 30 days.

Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has been steadily opening up the country to the international community since assuming office in 2016.

The latest changes are aimed at energizing the economy through tourism.

Uzbekistan has a population of 32 million, making it the largest of the 5 central Asian nations. The historic cities of Samarkand and Bukhara are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
