INNOVATIONS

An Invention of Global Value

Uzbekistan has been increasingly producing innovations of both local and global significance. Uzbekistan Today reporters learned about one of them at the Gidroelektroservis Company. Its engineering group has developed a unique technology of obtaining activated carbon. The know-how has no counterparts in the world and might claim for global distribution.

The domestic company produces activated carbon BAU, which is widely used in various industries, utilities and other areas. It is primarily used for cleaning drinking water. It is no secret that its quality is poor in many settlements. Therefore, the use of filters with activated carbon cartridges is often the only way to get good quality drinking water.

It is also used for water treatment in the food industry, for example, in the manufacture of soft carbonated and low alcohol beverages and beer brewing. Manufacturers of alcoholic beverages are major consumers of activated carbon BAU. It is used in the column filters as a kind of catalyst for ‘vodka’ taste. We got acquainted with domestic inventors at the stand of Uzvinprom-Holding at the recent Cooperation Fair in Tashkent.

According to chief engineer Mikhail Rojkov, coal is produced by the technology that has no counterparts in the world. It was developed and patented in Uzbekistan.

“We created the technology and equipment for it with our own hands, so, the entire process chain, each small screw is ‘Made in Uzbekistan.’ Worldwide, activated carbon is manufactured by the technology, which was invented by German scientists in the 19th century. It is about steam activation and long burning ovens – a harmful and obsolete method. We have proposed a different approach of producing coal in the pyrolysis reactors. It is an absolutely harmless technology, no one in the world produces activated coal this way,” said Mikhail Rojkov.

The technology has passed all certification procedures of the Academy of Sciences and the State Committee for Nature Protection.

“Our technology is safe,” continues Mikhail Rojkov. “Coal is an environmentally friendly purifier for drinking and waste water, it is used in the filters, oil and gas industry. Some brands of coal are used even in the high-tech medicine like hemodialysis, that is cleaning human blood. Uzbekenergo is currently our major customer – last year it purchased 50 tons. The company uses our products to clean the steam condensation at the thermal power stations and other facilities.”

The process goes as follows: at HES water is heated in huge cauldrons leaving limestone plaque on the walls if it is not filtered. A boiler consumes 10 times more gas, its efficiency sharply declines. A coal tube passes water through, softens it, draws out the limestone and extends the life of the equipment,” said the engineer.

It is important that the technology is extremely compact, mobile and economical. Throughout the world, it is produced at large plants, but domestic technology is based on individual modules that can be assembled in a short time and at low cost. If one of the modules fails, it is replaced by another unlike at large production lines, which have to be stopped in case of breakage of any component.

“So far, the coal cost is high primarily due to small scope of its production, which is about 60 tons per year. If it is stamped out on the assembly line, the cost will fall to 70%. Our foreign competitors have repeatedly addressed us asking to sell our invention, but we want it benefit our country,” said Mikhail Rojkov.
