A Jewel in the Crown of National Aviation
Tashkent Airport – the major air harbor of Uzbekistan – is standing on the threshold of large-scale modernization. It will be upgraded with an ultra-modern international terminal, Tashkent-4. In this work, Uzbekistan Airways has partnered with Korean Air and KOICA.
The Tashkent airport is a kind of an air gate of Uzbekistan. It is the place where tourists get their first impression of the country. Therefore, it is important that all harbor services operate well and smooth. Every year, the main jewel in the crown of the national aviation sends and receives over 2.8 million passengers. The airport’s capacity exceeds 1,300 passengers per hour. This huge stream requires serious manpower, and effective interaction of all links of the chain – the airline staff, customs officers and border guards. The airport has been recently unloaded with a new terminal for local flights, as well as the transit hall.
Meanwhile, it is getting prepared for large-scale construction works. Next year it is planned to launch the construction of a new international passenger terminal on the model of equipping and design of its best European counterparts. Its total cost exceeds $312 million. Foreign investments and loans make up the bulk of the funds – about $300 million. The new terminal is expected to serve 1,500 passengers per hour. For comparison, International Terminal C of Russia’s Sheremetyevo Airport also serves 1,500 passengers per hour.
The project is supported by long-term partners of Uzbekistan – Korean Air and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
According to Korean Air President Chi Chang-hoon, in the nearest future the company is planning to increase the capacity of cargo terminal at the Navoi hub, and get involved in the modernization of the Tashkent airport, namely the construction of a new international passenger terminal. Under the program of cooperation with Uzbekistan for 2015-2017, KOICA will be in charge for the development of the feasibility study of the project.
Other domestic air harbors keep abreast of the leader. Three airports – Samarkand, Bukhara and Urgench have recently repeatedly won the prestigious competition the ‘CIS Top Airport’ on the performance in 2014 by the ‘Airport’ Association of Civil Aviation.
Uzbek air harbors have been repeatedly winning various categories of the competition. This time, the Samarkand Airport with a traffic of 200,000-500,000 passengers was awarded in the category ‘Active and Motivated’, and Urgench Airport with the same volume of traffic won in the category ‘For Contribution to the Development of Production’. By a secret ballot the Bukhara Airport won the competition and was awarded the title of the ‘CIS Top Airport’ among air harbors with a capacity of 200 million passengers per year.
