Loads of Jazz Coming up…
The hot summer is behind and the revival of cultural life is ahead. Recently, the Batyr Zakirov Symphonic Orchestra played jazz in the Minor Hall of Uzbekistan State Conservatory.
This season, the Batyr Zakirov Symphonic Orchestra celebrates its 20th anniversary. However, little resembled that during their first concert.
“We are going to celebrate the 20th anniversary in November during a jazz festival, to which we will invite the stars of the national stage,” Mansur Tashmatov, artistic director of the orchestra, suggested. “In the meantime, we have been working in a normal rhythm.”
Although we cannot say that in this season everything is still going routine. Toward the end of the last season, the team agreed on a tradition that during the closing and opening of the season to conduct concerts with accompanying explanations of the shows performed. “Within two decades, the orchestra has generated its own class of fans; however, we must first of all – out of respect for them – help orient in our creativity and music directions,” Mansur Tashmatov has said.
The first concert presented renditions of pieces by Frank Sinatra, Marcus Miller, Stevie Wander and the group Zemlya I Ogon (Earth and Fire). What will be played at the next concert – and the team plans to organize three gigs a month in this season – is a secret.
The repertoire offers more than 60 works and the team is constantly working on its complementation. The philosophy of the orchestra is that the spectator should not be conquered by the product, but by quality. It is achieved by a unique mechanism that contributes to the maintenance of excellence. Such an approach is not formed by accident. The team is made up of 22 musicians, while many have a second job, and even their own bands. They play not only in concert halls, but also in various celebrations at the invitation. For every one of them the orchestra remains as a kind of standard of quality academic jazz music.
The program of each concert is determined at a rehearsal a few days before the performance, by the consent of all members of the team. “The fans of ours always are confident that at the next concert they will not listen to the music that had sounded previously,” Mansur Tashmatov concludes.
