Golden Record

Uzbek athletes get actively prepared for the 15th Paralympic Games in Brazil. They have won 22 tickets to Rio de Janeiro.

Seven years ago, athletes of Uzbekistan participated in the Paralympic Games for the first time. In Beijing our country was represented by just two sportsmen. Four years later in London, 10 representatives of our country demonstrated their strength and agility. Judoka Sharif Halilov won a silver medal, while swimmer Kirill Pankov set two Asian records. In Rio de Janeiro, our Paralympians can show even better results. The number of licenses they won already reached 22. National Paralympics team has eight licenses in judo, nine in track and field, three in swimming and one in shooting and powerlifting.

The Shooting World Cup, which took place in the Polish city of Szczecin, was marked by a convincing victory of Server Ibragimov. In addition to winning the Olympic license, our compatriot became the world record holder. After earning 198.9 points, server surpassed the result of the South Korean shooter Seo Younngkyun, which lasted for two years. This stage of the World Cup was attended by over 300 athletes from 40 countries.

The open championship of Asia in powerlifting among athletes with disabilities was conducted in Almaty at the end of July. Juniors also participated in this competition. Uzbekistan’s national team was represented by nine athletes, five of whom returned with medals. We were pleased with the performances of Roza Kuziyeva. In the supine position, she pressed the bar at 75 kg and won a bronze medal, and along with it a ticket to the 2016 Paralympics. The coaches of the junior team were also pleased. On the highest step of the podium were Farhod Umirzaqov and Hamid Rajapov. Both athletes have also become new record holders of Asia. Kudratoy Toshpulatova and Doston Abdusattorov won bronze and silver medals respectively.

“All the results have been expected. The country has continuously focused on the material and moral support of young people with disabilities in health promotion and sports,” said deputy chairman of the National Paralympics Association of Uzbekistan Umid Ahmadjonov. “The systemic work on the development of Paralympics movement allows us to bring up athletes, who can stand up for the honor of their motherland. We formed the national teams in judo, swimming, athletics, powerlifting, shooting, fencing and canoeing. We signed memorandums of cooperation with some of the leading sports federations of Uzbekistan. Now our athletes can increase their experience and skills by participating in specialized training camps. We have also established close cooperation with the National Paralympics Committees of China, Japan, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Russia. As a result, Uzbek athletes have the opportunity to participate in training camps abroad and pool experiences.”

The Congress of the Asian Paralympics Committee has been held last December in the United Arab Emirates. The National Paralympics Association of Uzbekistan was declared at one of its meetings the best sports organization on the continent. During the year, our athletes, competing at international tournaments, won 63 medals, 38 of which are gold. The Uzbek athletes made a real sensation at the second Paralympics Asian games. At the South Korean city of Incheon the flag of Uzbekistan was raised 22 times supported by the national anthem. In the total number of medals our athletes took the fifth place, ahead of the national teams of 35 countries.

This year, the track and field athletes and swimmers of the republic adequately performed at various tournaments, set records of Asia, and our judokas are said to be the strongest in the world. At the World Swimming Championship Dmitry Horlin won the first bronze medal in the 400m freestyle race. At the World Paralympics Games in Seoul, Uzbekistan obtained five gold, two silver and five bronze medals. In the team standings we took the sixth place among 45 countries. The champion of the Games Shahzod Jumaniyozov set a new record of Asia. Another of our swimmers Muhammad Abduraimov won a bronze medal. In judo, our heavyweight Shirin Sharipov won in the finals over the winner of the London Paralympics Games and the champion of the Asian Paralympics Games Gwyn Guen with an ippon in 1 minute and 5 seconds. Tursunpasha Nurmetova in the fight for the third place won the European champion from Sweden Anna Ingrid in 24 seconds. At the Grand Prix in Athletics in Beijing Mansur Abdirashidov was the strongest in the 200m sprint and finished second in the 100m. The bronze medal in the shot-put and the javelin was won by Sanobar Sobirova and Temurbek Giyazov. Sanjar Mansurov won the bronze medal in the Asian Championship in Taekwondo held in Taipei, China. These and other results are highly encouraging.
