The implementation of a range of measures on reclamation of the irrigated lands, enhancement of their productivity and fertility, and development of agricultural production has been underway in Uzbekistan
The National Program for the Further Reclamation of Irrigated Lands and Water Management for 2017 appears as a key pillar of the entire work. As commented by a representative of the Ministry of Economy, the program is expected to improve the ameliorative condition of more than 1.1 million hectares of land, as well as the technical condition of the 82,000 kilometers of drainage facilities, to provide a guaranteed discharge of drainage water from the area of over 255,000 hectares. It is noteworthy that the areas of strongly and medium saline lands will be reduced by 87,000 hectares, or 12%.
At the end of 2015 it is expected that the program will result in land reclamation of over 264,000 hectares. The projects funded by international institutions play a special role in this work. One of the major initiatives has been carried out in the southern districts of Karakalpakstan.
A project on streamlining water management on irrigated lands worth more than $376 million was launched in Ellikqa’la, Beruni and Turtkul districts of Karakalrakstana last year. After its completion in 2020, the water management system will be able to ensure a stable water supply to the population and to 100,000 hectares of land, the logistical capacity will be strengthened, and farm incomes will increase.
“We will deal with the reconstruction, repair and restoration of waterways in three districts,” said deputy technical director of the project Uktam Rozumov. “In particular, after the reconstruction of 35 km of the Buston Channel its capacity will increase to 105 cubic meters per second. It is planned to completely upgrade 31 km of ‘Magistral O’ng Qirgoq’ Canal, and 27.5 km of ‘Pakhtaarna’ Canal. 375 km of inter-farm canals will be rehabilitated in the districts.
According to experts, the full implementation of all the scheduled works would eliminate the need in using inefficient and outdated pumping equipment. Ultimately, that should save 5.78 billion soums, which is annually spent for maintenance and repair, as well as 8 billion soums, which is channeled to farmers and water user associations for maintenance of their water equipment. Above all, the program will provide annual savings of 21 million kW/h of electricity, and a large amount of diesel fuel (currency rates of CB RU from 21.10.2015 1$= 2663.45 soums).
The establishment of ‘Agrotehpahta’ MTP Company, which specializes in providing technical services to agricultural enterprises and farms, is another point of the program. Over the period of its operation it has provided farmers with more than 70 new cotton-picking machines, which are now widely used in the fields.
