Singing Their Way to Victory
Singers from 15 countries will strut their stuff at the 14th international Italian opera competition, Competizione dell’Opera, due in Tashkent for the first time on November 24-29.
“The competition will feature singers from 15 nations, who went through auditions in various cities throughout the world,” Bakhtiyor Yoqubov, Director of the Alisher Navoi Opera and Ballet Theater, said at a press conference.
“Each contestant will be tasked with performing six arias – four pre-selected and two of their own choice. The jury, headed by Austria’s Hans-Joachim Frey, director of the Association of the international competition, will include local opera stars such as Muyassar Razzoqova, Avaz Rajabov, Normumin Sultonov and Ismail Jalilov.
Uzbek opera singers have experience in participating in previous editions of the competition held elsewhere in the world and have been successful. In 2012, the Alisher Navoi Theater’s Rahim Mirzakamolov was named winner of Competizione dell’Opera in Minsk. A year later, the opera star Ramiz Usmonov scooped the second place in the Austrian city of Linz.”
It is hoped that the competition will not only put the spotlight on newcomer talents, but also help the singers to further hone their skills ahead of an international song contest scheduled in Uzbekistan next year.
Organizers of the major cultural event include the Ministry of Culture and Sports Affairs of Uzbekistan, the Association of the international competition, the Uzbekteatr Creative Association, and the Alisher Navoi Opera and Ballet Theater.
