A Good Start of the Big Take-Off Title

The first steps are always the most complicated. Learning a trade, grasping knowledge in different fields, young people need help and support. The Youth Week on December 12-17 in Tashkent demonstrated that the young generation in Uzbekistan stays in focus of the government’s concern. All initiatives and start-ups are encouraged, and the centuries-old system ‘ustoz-shogird’ (mentor-apprentice) allows passing skills, knowledge and experience from the older generation to the younger.

The Youth Week under the motto ‘The Tomorrow Is Our Goal’ has been held for the second time this year. It brings together a variety of projects in the field of theater, cinema, fashion, tourism, information technologies, aiming at educating the younger generation, overall support of talented young men and women, formation of well-developed personalities.

Such a large-scale event naturally involves several institutions. The Week was organized by the Public Youth Movement Kamolot, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, Higher and Secondary Special Education, Ministry for Development of Information Technologies and Communications, the Academy of Fine Arts, Creativity and Production Association Uzbekteatr, Uzbekkino National Agency and many others state and public organizations. In addition to the direct participants – winners and finalists of various competitions that take place during the event, the Week brings together forward-minded youth and enthusiasts from across the country – winners of Nihol and Zulfiya State Awards, international competitions, sporting events, culture and art contests.

Student theater studios

The glory of the winner of the first festival of student theater studios has not faded yet: the “Unyielding Hearts’ by Karakalpak State University was recognized the best performance. There was hardly a person in the hall of the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theatre, who would not be deeply touched by this ingenious and at the same time deeply philosophical performance. As promised, the actors have traveled with their performance throughout the country in the framework of the Kamolot festivals, inspiring coevals by their example, enticing them into the world of creativity. This is reason why student theater studios have been increasingly opened in higher education institutions across the country.

This year, the number of participants has increased by several times. The competition was held in four stages. Only seven amateur groups reached the finals: theater studios of Berdakh Karakalpak State University, Karshi State University, Nukus branch of the Tashkent University of Information Technologies, Navoi State Mining Institute, Mirzo Ulugbek National University of Uzbekistan, the Tashkent Institute of Textile and Light Industry.

“Creating specific images on the stage, living through different situations, students learn a lot from the great playwrights,” says a jury member, the Honored Artist of Uzbekistan Mahmud Ismailov. “It is good that all the festival performances touch upon relevant topics, encouraging the spectators for the good and creation. The roles are performed not by professionals; they are far from art in their everyday life. Even if they do not bind their lives with art, the cultural education will certainly contribute to their development as personalities.”

All participants of the republican stage of the festival can be considered the winners in some way. Having selected the best performance, the jury awarded the winners in seven categories, including performers of the best male and female roles, original dramatic composition, and others.

The Shirak play by Karshi State University was recognized the best. It entwined all the ‘must’ components of a good production – a relevant subject, acting, beautiful costumes and scenery, well-chosen music. The chance to perform on one of the country’s oldest theatrical stages at the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theatre was one of the gifts for the winners.

‘Tafakkur Sinovlari’

University students passed a trial for agility, ingenuity and creativity. The first, inter-faculty stage of the traditional competition ‘Tafakkur Sinovlari’ (Intellectual Competitions) took place this March. It brought together more than 2,000 students from 73 universities of the country. The second stage took place in 17 educational institutions with the involvement of over 700 students. The regional stage covered the teams of 19 universities and more than 150 students.

The teams of  ‘Al-Khorazmiy Izdoshlari’ of Urgench State University, ‘Agroislohotchi’ of Tashkent State Agrarian University, ‘Status’ of Jizzakh State Pedagogical Institute, ‘Irrigator’ of Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Land Reclamation and ‘Andijon Yoshlari’ of Andijan State University competed in the final stage of the competition. The latter fulfilled all the tasks of the competition in the best way, and was announced the winner.

All finalists demonstrated a good awareness of the ongoing changes in the legal, social, political and cultural sectors and innovative technologies in various genres.

Fashion and Design Festival

Fashion and Design Festival was one of the most colorful events of the Week. Professionals and budding fashion designers presented their most daring and original solutions from the latest collections. The festival included shows of young designers, national dress, Fashion Labs, scenic images, children’s and youth shows. The participants were traditionally offered master classes.

The Artlass festival took place as part of the Youth Week for the second time with 11 collections by 70 young authors. It brought together unconventionally-minded designers, who presented mainly the images of casual street style.

“Last year, I debuted with my collection at the ‘Fashion Lab’ show. It was a great opportunity to manifest myself. After the show, I started receiving various invitations. I was lucky to take part in the Fashion Week in Tashkent. The current event promotes the young too,” says the designer Regina Yusupova. “At last year’s Fashion and Design Festival I met many colleagues, shared ideas, so I am taking part in this year’s Youth Week once again. Two of my collections are represented in the Artlas show. This time, we independently worked on the preparation of the defile, which was interesting and useful for us. Using the concept of the collection, we could advantageously present it, selecting a good music and background.”

A video contest New Look

The contestants of ‘Yangi Nigoh’ (New Look) present tourist sites of our country in their videos from an unusual perspective. Sometimes, they even discover unknown places. More than 500 works from all over the country were submitted for this year’s qualifying round.

Organizers of the event, including state committees for tourism and nature protection, hope use the contest for the development of youth tourism; promote tourism capacity of regions and cities, historical monuments and places of worship in the regions under the protection of natural areas.

The jury announced the winners in the categories for the best video that displays the tourism capacity of Uzbekistan, ecotourism prospects, promotes national values and traditions, as well as for the best video about protected natural areas.

The competition of ‘The Cheerful and Resourceful’

The finals of ‘The Cheerful and Resourceful’ in the Istiqlol Palace was one of the most anticipated events of the Youth Week. The teams ‘Ilhom’ of Samarkand State University, ‘Ogalar’ of Andijan Agricultural Institute, ‘Omadli Jentlmenlar’ of Bukhara Engineering and Technology Institute, ‘Moliyachi’ of Tashkent Financial Institute and ‘Art-Study’ of the State Institute of Arts and Culture of Uzbekistan have reached the final stage. Having made a long and difficult path to the finals, they have reserved the best jokes and skits for the final evening. The young people deftly coped with all tasks of the contest – the greeting ‘We are ready for being champions’, question-answer ‘On the Whole Mahalla’s Lips’, demonstrating the ingenuity, as well as the music competition ‘New melodies for the New Year’. Participants showed the ability to laugh at themselves, performed funny stories of student life that are familiar to everyone, and most importantly, conveyed important things to their peers in an easy and understandable way, by means of humor.

The jury assessed the artistic level of performance, the capacity, ingenuity and erudition of the contestants, their scenic culture, acting, speech, culture and behavior on stage. According to the jury, the students of the Andijon Agricultural Institute have been the best this year. They won the coveted cup of the winner.

The short film festival PROlogue

Many directors begin their careers namely with short films. This is a complicated area of the cinema art, which requires serious skills and knowledge. In fact, the winners of the first festival last year, have participated in many international film festivals. Some of them have already produced their first full-length movies.

Nearly 100 amateurs and professionals have applied for the festival. The jury of well-known directors, actors, film critics was presented with 16 works. By tradition, the winners were selected in the categories for the ‘Best Short Feature Film’, ‘Best Screenplay’, ‘Best Directing ’ and ‘Best Cinematography’.

“When selecting the winners, the jury argued hoarse for three hours, because the competition program consisted of high-level works. It was difficult to come to a consensus. All works were different in content, ideological orientation, artistic execution. There are several guys among the participants, who can be safely trusted with a serious production. I have remembered the works for their sincerity, artistic honesty. The contest is a celebration for those who failed to win, because it is an opportunity to manifest themselves. I am sure that we will hear the names of the contestants in the future. They will step on the red carpet of the world’s most prestigious film festivals,” says a film critic, director and jury member Elmira Hasanova.

The movie ‘Mehmon’ by Abduazim Ilhomjonov was recognized the year’s best short film. The jury members also awarded a special prize.

MIT.uz national internet contest

The winners of the national Internet contest MIT.uz were awarded in the framework of Youth Week for the first time. The contestant works were assessed in the nominations ‘The best website on the rich culture, art, history of Uzbekistan, the idea of independence and spiritual values’, ‘The best website on prosperous life in the communities, villages and towns’, ‘The best website on tourism and economic potential of Uzbekistan’, ‘The best news website’, ‘The best website featuring the Year of Healthy Mother and Child’, ‘The best website on science and education’, ‘The best medical website’, and ‘The best website on the state language’.
