Techno parks in Tashkent

Tashkent has set an ambitious goal to grow into an advanced center of innovative industrial development. On the way towards the goal, the municipality has been attaching importance to the establishment of specialized industrial technology parks that would push a new format of industrialization, as well as continue building support for small business and private entrepreneurship. The Head of the Yakkasaroy Industrial Park Administration, Rustam Nuraliev, introduced Uzbekistan Today to the prospects of development of industrial parks in Tashkent:

“Our industrial park is the largest cluster in Tashkent and in Uzbekistan. Its establishment was launched in January 2014 in the territory of long-idle Tashkent textile mill. It was in a terrible state – all communications were so worn-out that it was deemed more profitable to build new ones. In the first six months, we fully restored the infrastructure and offered entrepreneurs the country’s cheapest rental rates. Today, they pay only 3,500 soums (currency rates of CB RU from 16.03.2016, 1$= 2866.75 soums) per square meter a year.

As a result, after two years the industrial park with a total area of 57 hectares contained more than 250 companies. Light industry with 43% of total production is dominant there. There are also representatives of mechanical engineering, chemical industry, wood processing and other fields. By the end of 2015, they manufactured products worth over 200 billion soums and created over 6,500 jobs.

The absence of the so-called threshold investment ranks among the major advantages of industrial park. The production volume does not play a key role in deciding on the allocation of rental room. A well-built business plan and targets are key factors.

The progressive development has allowed expanding the industrial park by 7 hectares, which is nevertheless insufficient for all those wishing to start their own business. Therefore, the long-term plans envisage the further expansion of the territory and creation of its own exhibition complex for the companies operating there. With this in mind, the municipalities are planning to invest over 90 billion soums in the development of the industrial park in the next decade.”

I am Kohlhaas

Such is the inscription on the T-shirts of three actors, who played all the roles in the new play “Michael Kohlhaas” that premiered at the Youth Theater of Uzbekistan. Indeed, each of us has something of Kohlhaas.

The same play is in the repertoire of Heidelberg Youth Theater (Germany), but it was staged by our producer, Obid Abdurakhmonov.

“We communicated with actors in English. But it was really difficult anyway, since neither I, nor they speak it as a mother tongue,” says Obid Abdurakhmonov. “The premiere was held early last December. The German actors promised to present their play to Tashkent spectators at the beginning of April.”

Staging of the play at the Youth Theater of Uzbekistan was made by the head of Heidelberg Theater Franciscka-Tereza Schutz. “Michael Kolhaas” in Germany and Uzbekistan is noted for its common decorations made by Philipp Kifer. Music too was composed by the same person – Vitaly Aminov, but, to be frank, it is different in each play.

The works by Heinrick von Kleist, which are familiar to every schoolchild in Germany, are acute for residents of any country, although the events had taken place in the mid-16th century. Kolhaas, horse trader from Brandenburg, becomes a victim of fraud and demands justice and fairness. In his aspiration to remedy the “appalling faults of this world” he steps over the brink of legally permitted limits.

There are three actors, two armchairs and several iron wardrobes out of which the actors periodically pick up their costumes and props; at times they come out in the role of source of mineral water; and after a couple of minutes – that of a table. Continued transformation of decorations, play of the light, actors’ reincarnations, and humor mixing up with cries of despair reproduce the entire depth of the story written back in 1810. The actors had played totally about 20 roles.

This play will take part at the festival in Germany early next May.
