The Five Elements of Chusovitina
An Olympic champion and the only female gymnast participant of six summer Olympic Games Oksana Chusovitina is preparing to take part in competitions in Rio de Janeiro 2016.
Oksana’s favorite discipline is the vault. In this category, she has won one gold, four silver and one bronze medals. This is an impressive record in gymnastics. Apart from that, her sports biography is filled with numerous awards from continental championships and other competitions. Five elements were named in her honor. All gymnasts know them by heart, but not everyone can perform them as well as she does
Oksana lives a very modest life. Speaking of her achievements, she says: “I never thought or dreamed of participating in the Olympics and world championships. I just do what I love.” Even when the conversation about the elements began, which were named after her, she explained: “I was just lucky. I just happened to be the first one to perform these elements when they were being registered and named after athletes.”
Oksana has been in big sports since 1991 and she remained dedicated to her job and her homeland all this time, despite the many ordeals that have come, her way.
“Throughout my career, I have traveled to many different countries and each of them was good in its own way, but I have not seen a better place than my native city of Bukhara, where 1 was born, and Tashkent, where I live and train, and whole Uzbekistan,” says Oksana Chusovitina. “While I was representing Germany, I always thought about the moment when I could return to my home.”
Oksana represented Germany for six years. This was dictated by the need to save her son Alisher, who was diagnosed with a serious illness. Upon learning of the diagnosis, she did everything to cure it. She had to move to Germany, where doctors gave her hope and promised the recovery of her child.
“The Olympics in Beijing became the most memorable for me”, says Oksana. “On my return to Germany, the first words I heard were that my son is absolutely healthy”.
The family returned to Tashkent in 2009. Oksana went on to participate for Germany and at the same time she was the coach of national team of Uzbekistan. In 2013, she took two crucial decisions: to work in her home country and leave coaching. She has once again become a gymnast, representing Uzbekistan. Her decision was supported by the Gymnastics Federation of the Republic and husband Bahodir Kurbanov.
It did not take long-before she showed great results: at the Asian Games in 2014 she won a silver medal. Among her most successful performances of the last three years was the World Cup Turnier der Meister 2015, which was held in March, in Germany. Our compatriot had no equals as she won the gold medal in her crown discipline – the vault.
Today Oksana, who underwent four surgeries after various sports injuries in her career, is preparing for the World Cup, in which she will be able to earn a license for the 2016 Olympic Games.
“I’m feeling excellent, and the training continues,” said Chusovitina.
